Vietnamese Business, Community and Culture
Advance Beauty College, a popular beauty school of Orange County, continually emphasizes in work community as well as culture. As a Vietnamese family run school, the beauty school participated in a unique opportunity to educate CSU Fullerton students on the beautiful and unique Vietnamese culture and its community. Professor Tu-Uyen Nguyen of Cal State Fullerton developed the “Asian American Studies 220: Vietnamese Communities in the US” program to educate students on Vietnamese business, community, and culture. As a result, Advance Beauty College and other local Vietnamese businesses have taken position in host undergraduate students during their spring break session. This spring 2016, CSU Fullerton students had the opportunity to attend a study away program focused on the Vietnamese community in “Little Saigon”, located right in the heart of Orange County.
CSU Fullerton Study Away Program
On March 29, 2016, Advance Beauty College hosted 15 students, professors, and the Dean for the Little Saigon Spring Break study program. The Orange County area, Little Saigon, covers parts of Westminster and Garden Grove, encompassing the single largest Vietnamese community in the United States. The area proudly includes around 10,000 Vietnamese-owned businesses! Enrollment is limited to 15 students who have the opportunity to experience Vietnamese business, culture, and communities during the one week program. The Little Saigon Spring Break study is incorporated into the regular semester class offered. Attendees will live in Little Saigon during the week, experiencing the many aspects of the community. The program provides students the opportunity to witness Vietnamese cultural, community, and business aspects through service learning possibilities as well as an oral history project. Food is even a stop during the learning trip! Major community organizations such as local businesses are part of the experience as well. The Little Saigon Spring Break study offers scholarship competitions as well, giving all students the opportunity to apply to study any desired aspect of Vietnamese culture, from business, family, food, education, and entertainment, to religion.
