As a current or prospective cosmetology student, you’ve probably thought a lot about the state board exam. Passing this exam is one of the final important steps on your way to becoming a licensed cosmetologist. At Advance Beauty College, we want all of our students to feel prepared for this exam and for a future beyond graduation.

About the Exam

After you complete our 1600 hour cosmetology program at Advance Beauty College you will be eligible to take the state board exam. You should receive an exam admission letter in the mail two weeks before your anticipated exam date. Approximately two weeks after you receive the letter, you will receive a handbook with your written exam time. When you come to take the exam, bring your admission letter, along with the sealed proof-of-training (POT) envelope, and a valid government issued ID. The California State Board of Cosmetology exam consists of two parts. For the written portion, candidates have 120 minutes to answer 100 questions, while the practical exam can last up to four hours.
