Pro Nails Association and Nailing It For America Officials
To Conduct News Conference 10 a.m. today in Garden Grove
Nail salon owners join volunteers helping healthcare workers to respond to Gov. Newsom’s surprise statement that a nail salon was first case of COVID-19’s community spread in Calif.
WHAT: Representatives from the influential Pro Nails Association representing nail salon owners, nail techs, distributors, manufacturers, students and schools across the U.S. are teaming up with officials from the “Nailing It For America” all-volunteer initiative for a news conference to respond to remarks by Gov. Calvin Newsom earlier today at his daily press briefing where he made a surprising admission: “This whole thing started in the state of California, the first community spread, in a nail salon. I’m very worried about that.”
WHEN: 10 a.m. (Friday, May 8, 2020)
WHERE: Advance Beauty College, 10121 Westminster Ave., Garden Grove, Calif. (Physical distancing required)
WHY: Embargoed Partial Statement from Mike Vo to be made public at 10 a.m. news conference:
“At his daily news conference when answering a question from a news reporter, Gov. Gavin Newsom made comments that were both surprising and disappointing. As a former restaurateur himself, the governor knows the daily struggles of small business owners such as the 11,000 nail salons in California where approximately 80 percent of salons are owned and operated by Vietnamese Americans. We also know of his support of immigrants and refugees — and their countless contributions in making our Golden State even more golden. As Vietnamese Americans, our hearts go out to the lives lost, to all those impacted family members and to their loved ones along with so many others devastated by the coronavirus pandemic. It also pains us as law-abiding Americans living and working in California that the governor’s remarks may contribute to further anxiety and even heightened fear in today’s unfortunate toxic environment.”
– Mike Vo, Board Chair of the Pro Nails Association, Irvine, Calif.
Embargoed Partial Statement from Tam Nguyen to be shared publicly at 10 a.m. news conference:
“When the coronavirus pandemic hit and the state’s necessary stay-at-home order began, I experienced the same sorrow and panic gripping the nail industry that was comparable to the despair and sadness we all felt as refugees fleeing war-torn Vietnam. Last Thursday, April 30, to commemorate when the Vietnamese community first arrived in California 45 years ago to that day, we mobilized Vietnamese Americans across the land for a special day of giving back to the country that embraced as refugees after the Fall of Saigon in 1975. In total, the ‘Nailing It For America’ volunteer initiative has donated and delivered more than 120,000 medical-grade face mask, 300,000 gloves and tens of thousands of other personal protective equipment along with delivering more than 20,000 restaurant meals to healthcare workers and other front-line workers in Southern California fighting COVID-19. We look forward to providing details on how we plan to respond to the governor’s comments with our own words – but most importantly, with our actions as proud Americans helping our fellow citizens and others in times of grave need.”
– Tam Nguyen, Founder of Nailing It For America in Garden Grove, Calif.
